One of the great things about KISS collecting is that your collection has
value. There are many reasons fans want or need to sell and hopefully these
tips will help:
Who do you sell to? You basically have two options here. Either sell to a
dealer at a wholesale price, or sell it yourself at retail. Selling to a
dealer is the easiest and fastest way to turn your collection into money. A
dealer, or retailer will generally buy small items for 40% to 50% of the
retail value. Larger items 50% to 60%. This is typical of ANY type of
retailer. Keep in mind the retailer has to pay advertising, printing,
postage, transportation and convention costs such as table rental,
transportation and lodging not to mention the time, effort and risk of
selling each item individually. And on top of that, about 1/3 of the
remaining profit goes to taxes.
If YOU want to sell at retail prices, keep in mind you will have to pay all
those costs as well as do all the work yourself. If that's the way you want
to go, a good idea would be to rent tables at several KISS conventions, ($75
to $125), take out ads in magazines or sell items at online auctions. Keep
in mind how many hours this will take and compare that to what you get paid
hourly at your regular job.
Which way is
better? That mostly depends on how much time and motivation you have. The
main disadvantage the casual seller has to the professional dealer is the
lack of a mailing list. It takes years and thousands of dollars to build up
a good list of KISS buyers. But if you're the type of person who enjoys
working with people and has fun traveling to conventions, then consider
selling on your own. Links for KISS conventions are
listed on this site.
The KISS MUSEUM
does indeed buy up KISS collections. We've been buying them since 1987 and
have a reputation for good, honest prices. We're not interested in vinyl or
any of the new items that can still be ordered from a manufacturer. All
other items, especially promo items, out of print items and '70s stuff, we
will buy. Send a list of what you have along with each item's condition. We
will evaluate it and make you an offer on the entire collection, not piece
by piece. Or, you may quote us a price.
